One of the best black dyes in ESO is actually surprisingly easy to get. This is going to be a pretty quick guide, covering how to get the 10-Year Anniversary Ebon Leather Dye.
This is a dye that I personally slept on for quite a long time, but it’s a great alternative to Void Pitch Black and Coldharbour Ash Gray that’s actually surprisingly easy to get.
You do need a couple DLCs and you need to do a little bit of legwork, but compared to the other black dyes, it is both blacker and easier to come by.
In this guide, I’m going to explain what 10-Year Anniversary Ebon Leather Dye is, how to get it, and I’m also going to compare it to other black dyes in the game.
Is Ebon Leather Dye in ESO actually black?
Yes, this is an actually black dye. It’s not gray. It’s not black but with weird colors underneath it. It’s just pure black.
It looks black on every material. It looks black on fabric, it looks black on leather. It even looks black on metallic surfaces, which is definitely something of a rarity.
As anyone who has messed around with style in ESO knows, dyes rarely look the way they do in their Dye Stamp. I’m talking about this little square that’s supposed to give you a preview of the dye.
In reality, that preview really rarely shows what the dye actually looks like. But in this case, the preview looks black and the dye itself looks black.
In that way, it’s better than the Coldharbour Ash dye, which ends up looking brown or even kind of reddish-brown on certain materials and in certain lights.
How do you get Ebon Leather Dye in ESO?
The 10-Year Anniversary Ebon Leather Dye is awarded by completing the achievement Commemerative Activity Achiever. This achievement is located under Menu > Journal > Achievements > Character > Anniversary.
This achievement came out with the 10th Anniversary Celebration in ESO a couple years ago. There are five activities you need to complete to get this dye:
1.) Scrying and Excavating an Antiquity
How do you unlock Scrying in ESO?
Accessing the Antiquities system in ESO requires the Greymoor DLC, which is where you get the Scrying skill line. To unlock this skill line, you need to go to the city of Solitude in Western Skyrim.
Then you go to a building toward the south of the city called the Antiquarian’s Circle. It’s conveniently marked by an icon that looks just like the Scrying icon, so it’s pretty easy to find.
Once you’re there, talk to Verita Numida to start the quest. You do a little bit of legwork, then you’ve unlocked Scrying.
How do you dig up Antiquities in ESO?
The best way to dig up Antiquities to complete achievements like Commemorative Activity Achiever or level Scrying is to travel to Artaeum.
To get there, you need to have the Summerset DLC. Once you’re in Artaeum, simply Scry the lead, dig up the Antiquity, and rinse-and-repeat if you’re leveling.
2.) Crafting a Piece of Jewelry
How do you craft jewelry in ESO?
You need to have access to the Summerset DLC to access jewelry crafting. Once you have the DLC, simply visit any Jewelry Crafting Table, and create a piece of jewelry.
How do I unlock Jewelry Crafting Writs in ESO?
To unlock Jewelry Crafting Daily Writs in The Elder Scrolls Online, go to the city of Alinor and talk to an NPC named Felarian who is located right outside the main crafting area. If your jewelry crafting level is already at Level 10 or above, you can skip the intro quest.
3.) Playing a Tales of Tribute Match Against Another Player
What is Tales of Tribute in ESO?
Tales of Tribute is an in-game card game within ESO that was released with the High Isle Chapter. To access it, you need to have the High Isle DLC.
Then, simply go to the city of Gonfalon Bay in High Isle and then head over to the Gonfalon Gaming Hall (across the river from the Wayshrine) to begin the introductory quest.
How do you join a Tales of Tribute game against another player?
Once you’ve unlocked Tales of Tribute in ESO’s High Isle DLC, Tales of Tribute will become an available option in the Activity Finder. Simply select this option, and queue for a Ranked or Unranked game.
How do you complete a Tales of Tribute game for the Commemorative Activity Achiever achievement in ESO?
Simply join a Tales of Tribute game though the Activity Finder, and make sure to complete it. You can’t just forfeit. If you do so, you will not satisfy this portion of the achievement.
You don’t actually have to participate, though. You can just skip every turn, but you do have to see the thing through and either win or be defeated.
Forfeiting not only does not complete this requirement for the Commemorative Activity Achiever achievement, but it also puts you in a penalty box where you have to wait 10 minutes before you can do another game.
My advice is to join a Casual (not Ranked) game. Just let yourself get beaten, and you’ll be one step closer to getting your dye.
4.) Scribing a Skill at a Scribing Altar
How do you unlock Scribing in ESO?
To unlock Scribing in ESO, you simply go to the Crown Store, tab over to the Upgrades section, and claim the Scribing introductory quest, The Second Era of Scribing.
Scribing is technically part of the Gold Road DLC. However, it has been made free as part of the base game, so you no longer have to go to the West Weald to unlock it.
How do you scribe a skill in ESO?
Claiming the free Scribing bundle in the ESO Crown Store under the Upgrades tab gives you access to the tutorial quest The Second Era of Scribing, during which you will scribe a skill at a Scribing Altar, thus fulfilling that requirement of the Commemorative Activity Achiever achievement.

ESO Ebon Leather Dye Compared to Coldharbour Ash Black
The difference between the Coldharbor Ash Black and Ebon Leather dyes is pretty subtle, but it’s definitely noticeable. On Coldharbour Ash Black, you will note a brownish or reddish sheen on many dyed surfaces.
This effect is the most noticeable on metallic surfaces. Coldharbour Ash Black not as glossy as Ebon Leather, and it’s a bit lighter.
How do you get Coldharbour Ash Black in ESO?
The Coldharbour Ash Black dye is awarded by completing the Coldharbor storyline in ESO. This is a base game dye that does not require any DLCs.
However, you do have to complete either the Harborage Questline or your full Alliance Questline and then go through the entire Coldharbour quest line to get the dye.
ESO Ebon Leather Dye Compared to Void Pitch Black
Void Pitch Black, acquired from the arena Vateshran Hollows, is often cited as the best black dye in ESO. It’s a very dark black, but it also has kind of a purplish sheen to it. It’s honestly not really a true black.
Even if Void Pitch Black was the best black dye ever, it is absurdly hard to get — not really in terms of sheer difficulty, but in terms of how long you have to grind to get it.
How do you get Void Pitch dye in ESO?
Void Pitch Black dye is awarded from the Vateshran Hollows achievement Honor to the Spiritblood. This requires completing five other achievements, including:
- Scattered Spirits, which requires multiple runs of Vateshran Hollows.
- Seeker of the Hollows, which involves completing hidden challenges.
- Fire Walker, which is absolutely absurd. You first have to get a Brimstone Orb and then travel 10km through lava. You can’t mount, you just walk back and forth.
- Trapped Between Worlds, which involves acquiring a debuff called The Wounding portal but surviving
- High Flyer, which requires you to grapple 500 times.
Just repetitive busywork that really has nothing to do with the actual gameplay offered by Vateshran Hollows.
Especially given the fact that Void Pitch isn’t even that black in my opinion. I’d have to stick with my analysis that Ebon Leather is the best black dye in the game.
It’s blacker than Coldharbour Ash Black. It’s even blacker than Void Pitch in many cases, and it’s definitely easier to get.
ESO Ebon Leather Dye Compared to Legate Black
There is also Legate’s Black, which is very black as well. To get this dye, you have to get reach Legate rank on a character in PvP.
That is an incredibly high rank equating to hundreds — if not thousands — of hours of PvP gameplay.
But, at least this one can be considered to be actually black. It’s just that the amount of effort required to get it is absolutely astronomical.
